The real reason a half-finished thought keeps coming back

You are in a meeting, or half asleep, or three sentences into a conversation with someone else, and a thought from this morning taps you on the shoulder again. Not urgently. Just present. Again.

If you have gone looking for an explanation, you have probably found one: the Zeigarnik effect. Named after a Soviet psychologist who noticed in 1927 that waiters could recall an order perfectly while it was still open, then forgot it the moment the bill was paid. Unfinished business, the story goes, gets a permanent tab in your memory. Search for it and you will get roughly the same eight hundred words about it, nine different times.

We checked the 1927 finding against what nearly a century of replication has actually shown. It does not hold up. Which turns out to matter, because the thing that does hold up explains your Tuesday better than the thing everyone is citing.

The memory-boost claim does not replicate

A 2025 meta-analysis pooling dozens of studies, published in Nature's Humanities and Social Sciences Communications, looked at whether people really do remember unfinished tasks better than finished ones. They do not. Recall was almost identical between the two: a weighted ratio of 0.99, about as close to no difference as data gets.

So the specific story, that your brain keeps the order open so it can remember it, is not what is happening. If it were purely a memory effect, forgetting the details would end it. It does not.

The part that is actually true

The same review found something else, and it is more robust: people resume interrupted tasks about 67% of the time, well above the 50% you would expect from chance, consistent across roughly twenty separate replications. This is a different, older, less-quoted finding called the Ovsiankina effect.

Not a memory boost. A pull to go back and finish.

It is registering that something was left open, and it does not much care whether you can still picture the details. It cares whether the loop got closed.

Why "I will remember" does not work

This is why telling yourself you will remember to deal with it later so rarely settles anything. You might even be right, you might remember it fine. It does not matter. The pull is not coming from a fear of forgetting. It is coming from the thing still being open. Remembering it perfectly and doing nothing about it feels exactly as unfinished as forgetting it.

Which also means a note that only captures does not close anything either. If you write a thought down and never look at it again, you have not resolved the open loop. You have relocated it into a list you never revisit. The pull does not go away, because from the mechanism's point of view, nothing actually happened.

What actually closes a loop

Two things, based on what the resumption research points to.

1. Capture enough to actually resume it, not just to prove it happened

"Talk to Sam" does not let you resume anything three days from now. You have noted that a thought existed, not preserved the thought. A note that lets you pick up where you left off is doing a different job than a note that is just a receipt.

2. Come back to it on purpose, not by accident

The resumption instinct is real, but it needs an opening. A thought sitting in an app you never reopen is a loop with no way back in. It stays open the same way it would if you had never written it down at all.

That second one is the part almost nothing in this category actually does. Plenty of apps will hold what you type. Very few of them ever bring it back.

What this means for how Corteks was built

What the research does support is closing the loop rather than just filing it: capture that takes about four seconds and holds enough of the thought to actually resume it, and a weekly reading that brings your week back to you instead of leaving it in a list you have to remember to check. When it notices you have circled the same thing four times, that is not a memory trick. That is the resurfacing your open loops were waiting on.
